The truth about SAT exams

US universities are one of the most sought after in the world for the quality of education, research opportunities and future prospects of graduates. Every year, universities receive thousands of applications from within the country as well as overseas. With prospective students coming in from different curriculum and school systems, SAT aims to assess all on a common platform. Students planning to graduate from reputed US universities usually start preparing well in advance to score well in SAT. Though some colleges are doing away with SAT, they are still in minority and there are few outside of the US that also accept SAT scores to take in new students. All in all, SAT is an all important part of college education in US.

SAT is a standardized paper-based test of 3 hours in addition to 50 minutes for essay writing taken by high school students.  The aim of SAT is to test a student’s readiness for college education covering aspects of reading, writing, general knowledge, math and language. These are divided into 3 main sections; critical reading, mathematics and writing. All are multiple choice questions with the exception of the essay piece.  The questions are framed in a way that help assess a student’s analytical and critical thinking apart from problem solving and language skills. With a restricted time allotted, SAT is aims to quantify these traits through the SAT score.

Due to high volume of applications for the limited number of available admissions in the universities, SAT is easily one of the most competitive exams in the world. To do well in SAT, students often plan years in advance. Specialized SAT preparatory courses offer much needed guidance, especially to students outside of US. Also, some students may find SAT framework much different from their existing school curriculum while for some it may be more familiar. Some schools are more attuned to a universal education and therefore, for example, students graduating from IB Diploma programmes, would find SAT preparation more recognizable and easy to relate to. It also helps that IB curriculum’s wider acceptance, helps students to transition to US universities more comfortably.

Registration for SAT is done online and the centres for the test are available in most countries (list available on the official website). SAT is offered 7 times in US and 6 times worldwide every year. The Canadian International School is one of the SAT centres in Singapore.  It is also, one of the most reputed IB school in the country offering IB programmes from primary to high school level. The coordinator for Sat at the school is available for any questions related to SAT in general.

The aim of SAT is not to establish the best candidates, but to ascertain that all are at the same range when entering colleges in US. SAT is also, just one of the aspects to select candidates, though it is an important one. Colleges can be picky when they have several hundreds of applications and when the scores are acceptable, it is the students’ aptitude, personality, creativity and recommendations from past educators that help make final decisions by college managements.

How will a scholarship help students realize their true potential?

In today’s competitive academic environment, it is imperative for students to recognize their own potential early in their academic career. This recognition equips them with the right skills to channel their interests along a specific path and thereby foster their overall growth. In this context, the importance and impact of scholarships make a worthwhile discussion. A scholarship can give students the much needed advantage, enabling them to dedicate time for enhancement of their knowledge through service-learning experiences, volunteer opportunities and internships.

Economic advantage
Perhaps the most logical and immediate reason for a scholarship would be the financial aspect of it, which entitles meritorious students to a reduction in tuition fees as well as other incidental costs. This enables students to overcome financial barriers with ease, and focus their energies towards obtaining their education goals. In a bid to underscore the importance of providing financial aid to recognize academic excellence, international schools such as the Canadian International School (CIS), through their International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) at Singapore, offer scholarships based on academic merit. By providing sufficient scholarship assistance, CIS Singapore aims to enable greater success in education, providing the right amount of backing for IB students to give back their bit to the society.

The psychological benefit
Going beyond the financial support dimension, scholarships seem to provide a morale boost to students. On a more personal level, a scholarship can reinforce a student’s self-confidence and give them the motivation for better academic performances. Given that a scholarship is a concrete way of demonstrating that you are a resourceful person, it certainly works wonders to make you feel appreciated. Working on this aspect that provides a sense of achievement to students, CIS believes that scholarships establish the path for students to realise the importance of academic excellence. Several students who graduated from CIS in the past have been able to benefit through their scholarships at the IB level so much so that they stand testimony to the fact that these scholarships offer a distinct advantage, both personally and professionally. The support that students receive from their own community instils a greater sense of belonging and motivation to make it through their higher education.

Employment edge
Translating that CV into an employment resume is the end goal of any student’s education, and having a few scholarships on the resume can make a big difference with a potential employer. Employers who recognise and value the competitive nature of scholarships will consider it as an accomplishment. Generally, a merit-based scholarship demonstrates to future employers that students have exceptional ability in the academic, athletic or artistic realm. Competitive scholarships are accomplishments worth listing on one’s CVs.
A small push can mean a giant leap, after all. This statement sums it up as to why scholarships matter to students. Simply put, scholarships serve as one of the primary means for students to realize their full potential!

IB Middle Year Programme

The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is a strong framework of school curriculum offering an approach to teaching and learning which is a departure from the traditional school curriculums. With an emphasis on unique students’ personal development along with academic achievements, IB taught in over 40,000 schools across the world. The USP of IB is its non allegiance to any particular country, which makes it more acceptable across geographies and particularly ideal for students who change or intend to change countries. So an Australian family moving to Asia, can expect similar education for the children and therefore an easier transition whilst moving to a completely new culture.

The IB programmes are offered through the entire schooling starting from the Primary Years Programme (for age 3-12 years), Middle Years Programme (age 11-16 years) and  IB Diploma (for age 16-19 years). There is also the IB Career –related programme catering to specific career related education/ apprenticeship).

The IB Middle Year Programme is a 5 year programme comprising of eight subject groups:

1.      Language acquisition.
4.      Sciences.
5.      Mathematics.
6.      Arts.
8.      Design.

The curriculum includes a minimum of 50 hours of teaching time for each of the above subjects  every year. In the last couple of years, the subject list is restricted to six which are chosen by the students as per their aptitude. With an inclination towards the subjects of their liking, MYP prepares students for greater indepth studies at the Diploma level for their chosen subjects. A long term project (community based project towards the end of the MYP) and inter disciplinary learning (learning two subjects cohesively)  is also a part of the curriculum. These are crucial aspects of the IB MYP. The inter disciplinary approach is a great way to understand different subjects and their relation with each other. Young learners are highly receptive and the secondary school is the perfect time to engage them in connecting different subjects. The MYP project on the other hand aims for students to demonstrate what they have learnt and what they want to learn in future. Creating solutions, making decisions, communication and planning are all qualities that can be well tested through hands on projects.

Though the IB MYP is a 5 year programme, it is not surprising to see some IB authorized world schools adopting a more concise 2, 3 or 4 year programmes as the IB allows such flexibility. The Canadian International School, Singapore, for example has a 4 year IB MYP through grade 7 to 10. The school offers all 3 IB programmes through Primary to Diploma level. The IB MYP prepares students during the secondary school years for the much more rigorous IB Diploma through grades 11-12. Making practical connections between different learnings and relatinf learning to the real world is encouraged at the school through its teaching aids and philosophies.
IB world schools are often considered a departure from the mainstream, however with rapid developments in the global trade, politics and family dynamics, IB serves as an ideal curriculum to raise creative thinkers and leaders of tomorrow. Flexible and more fluid course contents that are adapted by schools all over the world along with strong emphasis on each child’s unique aptitude grants IB the well earned reputation and universal acceptance.

How to choose a kindergarten

How to choose a kindergarten
As a parent, choosing the right kindergarten school for your child is a huge responsibility. It is easy to realise why. Kindergarten is the child’s first introduction to the school environment. His/her experience here will determine the orientation he/she has for the entire academic life – it may be nourishing or leave a permanent scar. If you are out scouting international schools for the perfect one for your kid, it may help to have a checklist of what to look for in the perfect kindergarten. Run your eyes through the list below for the essentials:

Do a thorough internet research: Make sure you have checked the websites of all probable schools and check out on parental reviews wherever available. Also be discreet in ensuring that the websites and reviews are current because stale information may indicate a careless attitude from the school administration.

Do location scouting: So you think you have hit upon the perfect school for your kid, but have you checked the location? If the school is located far away and does not have a bus service to pick up and drop your ward, you may be in for a lot of daily toil.

Open house visits: Be on the lookout for open house visits that schools organize just before enrolment time and treat it as an opportunity to view the school. If the school doesn’t hold open houses, ask for a guided tour before you make your final decision. Any school who avoids revealing its operations before enrolment should be avoided.

Students and teachers are the key: The current students and teachers of a school are your key to judging the status of the school. A good school will have happy teachers and students and an upbeat mood. A school with a gloomy front and dissatisfied employees will not be a good choice.

Active participation in learning: Gone are the days of rote learning methods. Any school that expects children to sit stationary for a long time is a strict no-no. Look for schools that employ methods like pretend play, reading, painting, puzzles and encourage students to participate in the lessons. Schools like the Canadian International School Singapore use latest interactive techniques to engage children in their lessons. This results in better analytical and experiential skills.

Low teacher-to-child ratio: Look for schools that have greater attention for the individual child with more teachers per child and hence a chance for better development. This gives your child the opportunity to feel special and perform better.

The writing on the wall: When you are visiting a probable school, look towards the walls to see whether the writings and drawings of the children are prominently displayed. A school that does not do it is negating the uniqueness of each child and losing out on the opportunity of instilling pride in each of them.

Question the teachers: What the children learn every day should be your business. Do your bit to ensure that learning numbers, alphabet, beginning science such as nature exploration, frequent reading, and computers are included in the curriculum and a 1 hour recess is provided for your kid to refresh.

Verify the school’s policy for children with different learning capacities: Look for a school that has a definite policy to deal with students who are ahead of and behind the class. Everyone has a unique learning rhythm and deserve their own personalised study regime.

Talk to other parents: Talk to parents of students currently studying or who have studied in the school in the past. This will give you a clear idea of the strengths and weaknesses of the school as you will get a horse’s mouth view about the school.kindergarten singapore

Check for an after-school program: A full time working mom? It would make sense to check whether the school has an after school program that can engage your kid while you are away. Check to see if the program has academic syllabi rather than plain babysitting services.

Research the advanced grades: Look up the students in the advanced grades. Check if they are being educationally challenged and if the teachers and children are still happy. Are they picking up the skills fast and are they smoothly going on the learning curve? This may be the right choice!
Zero tolerance: Don’t shy away from asking school authorities about their anti-bullying policies and throwing up what-if situations. You have every right to ensure that your child is protected from the menace right from the beginning.
Be clear on the discipline policies: Be sure to agree on the discipline policies of the school. What is the expected behaviour and how should you maintain consistency at home? What are the rewards and punishments?
Kindergartens are the preparatory zones for a long academic career ahead and getting it right will spell success for the child. A right beginning always shows the way.

(DP EXPO) IB Diploma pre-admission support at CIS

The International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes are known for developing an inquiry based learning, a very different approach from the traditional rote learning philosophy that has been followed in traditional schools for a long time. Singapore offers many options when it comes to IB schooling starting from the IB PYP (Primary years Programme) to IB Diploma (Grade 11-12). The IB diploma is a comprehensive 2 year course and choosing the diploma subjects is often a time for confusion and anxiety for students after grade 10. The course chosen at this stage guides the next phase of education i.e. the university level and career prospects for the future. Therefore, students may need guidance in order to make a well-informed choice.

International schools have a legacy of a more personalized approach to child education. With ideal teacher-student ratio and a focus on individual child development, it is no surprise that international schools are proactive in providing the much needed help and support to students for choosing the IB diploma courses. The Canadian International School (CIS) is one such school. It is one of the most progressive and reputed schools offering IB at all 3 levels i.e. Primary, Secondary and Diploma level. Diploma courses need to have a selection of one subject from each of the 6 main ones i.e. Language and literature, Language Acquisition, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts/ Optional subjects and Individuals and Societies. Of these, 3 must be taken at HL (Higher level) allowing specialization and remaining at SL (Standard Level).

For students due to get into diploma, the school organizes an expo every year. It can be considered a pre-admission counseling session. It is a gathering of students currently in grade 10, teachers, course coordinators and current diploma students. Students looking for options in IB Diploma (IBDP) get to know about what all is on offer. They can interact with the teachers one-on-one or in group talks. It is a great way to learn about everything that is out there about course expectations, content and future prospects. Apart from this, an interaction with students of grade 11-12 is highly encouraged. Present diploma students share their experiences about their choice of courses and what to expect. CIS continues the counseling beyond the expo through discussions with DP Co-ordinator and academic counselor at the school. Needless to say, a student is provided all the help that he/she may need in order to make a selection.

An IBDP is a demanding and comprehensive two-year course that needs focus and motivation. Therefore, it is crucial that students choose a course that is closest to their liking and abilities. A support from the school in terms of teachers and current diploma students goes a long way in making right choices for grade 10 students.

Honing Skills to be Future Ready

Being a multilingual and open country where many languages are spoken, Singapore includes a wide variety of language schools. In this informative article, I cover different types and what to keep in mind when selecting your school of choice.
Decision #1 Pure language school vs. hybrid school
Although some schools in Singapore give attention to teaching languages alone, it's very common to see private schools that combine language courses with course offerings in hospitality, commerce or preparatory courses for entering Singapore's primary or secondary schools.
These'hybrid'schools are usually larger, meaning they offer more services with their enrolled students, such as events and help in securing a destination for a stay. They can also smooth the way to follow-up studies in the city state, as they'll have connections with local Universities and Polytechnics.
On the flip side, the'pure'language schools tend to be more centered on the language curriculum. In the event that you prefer to enroll in a college that gives languages alone, you will often manage to take advantage of language and culture related activities form lessons.
Decision #2 EduTrust vs. non-Edutrust
EduTrust is Singapore's scheme for certifying private schools. EduTrust is required for schools that provide full-time courses above a particular duration and courses for that your course fees are over a particular amount. The upside of EduTrust is that they have to have clear procedures set up to ensure school fees are safe and students are ensured.
The downside is... bureaucracy. Simply signing up for a language course usually requires 3 forms, to be completed in person. You need to prove that you have health insurance and may need to sign up for fee protection insurance or an Escrow arrangement for paying your lesson fees. In a nutshell, whilst it has some protection, EduTrust may also allow it to be rather complicated to really sign up for your course, particularly if you are not based in Singapore.
Decision #3 Single vs. multiple language schools
Some schools prefer to specialize in a single language while others provide a whole selection of different languages. There are schools specializing in English, Mandarin, French, Spanish, Korean, Japanese and perhaps other languages as well.
Specialized language schools often provide a better developed curriculum and more class start dates, if you are able, it is certainly recommended to become listed on a course at a single language school. To learn more please visitSecondary school singapore

Why play is a serious activity for a young child

Why play is a serious activity for a young child

Ever wonder why young children are always playing? It’s not uncommon to see parents at home and teachers at school restricting play time for the kids because children seem to play endlessly. Throwing and breaking things, creating a mess and non-stop noise may seem chaotic and irritating to adults but, young children are actually working hard while playing. It may seem obvious to an adult, but motion, sounds and space are some aspects that children understand with good old playtime. Research regarding the importance of play is quite clear, but most kindergartens and preschools are leaning towards structured learning. Making children acquainted with reading and writing skills as early as possible seems to be the norm.

Play can be a precursor for advanced academic abilities

Children are naturally curious and motivated. A preschooler or a primary school student can learn much better with play by inventing stories, indulging in pretend play, solo or with other children. Some children become quite adept at more complex socio-dramatic play which helps fuel their creativity and imagination even further. There have been studies that have indicated that 10 year olds who were made to learn phonics, alphabets and numbers didn’t do quite as well in Math and reading skills than ones who simply played more at kindergarten. Countries like Germany, Japan and Finland are examples of how more play based early learning and delayed stress on reading and writing skills reaps richer rewards in advanced learning abilities at later stages. Children from Finland especially, have been consistently doing well in the international PISA exam; a country where first graders are 7 years old instead of 6 years.

IB world schools, a departure from traditional learning centres

The International Baccalaureate curriculum can be considered one of the most relevant school programmes today. Not only is it not affiliated with any particular country, it packs in what students need to learn in school, how much and with what aids. The curriculum is designed in a way that gives guidelines and schools are allowed to customize it as long as the basic principles and minimum conditions of IB are met. The IB curriculum is reputed to produce students who achieve personal development goals along with academic excellence. Its universal acceptance is it’s another aspect that attracts students from all over the world.

IB authorised world schools have more opportunities and freedom to include play in their teaching programmes unlike traditional schools. Learning through curiosity rather than through rote learning is one of the cornerstones of IB education. With early learners in preschools and kindergartens, the IB PYP (Primary Years Programme) allows more fluid learning experiences.

The Canadian International School, Singapore is one such progressive school that has embraced the IB programme and places key emphasis on play based approach to learning. The dedicated ODC (Outdoor Discovery Centre) provides a much needed natural open space for children to indulge in free play or other outdoor activities and games.

Striking a healthy balance of academics and play is the key to a successful teaching programmes at schools. Learning while at play is a well understood philosophy however the right mix of reading and writing skills with unstructured play time can be crucial at kindergarten and preschool levels.  A classroom that is rich in play but still with some adult supervision and guidance, can prove to be most productive. Child initiated activities in a safe environment are breeding grounds for immense learning and understanding for young kids. Schools can do well by adopting more play-based activities and make it a serious business as it deserves to be.
